Emergency Grants

What is the Emergency Grant Program?

This program provides emergency grants in the form of goods, services or cash to assist mothers and their families with a demonstrated, urgent need that cannot be met through any government or agency help.

Why is this needed?

With the recent economic downturn, women’s unmet needs are more pressing than ever. Mothers who were just barely getting by now find themselves in crisis — without money to pay for basic needs such as clothing and food, gas for their cars, utilities or medical bills. Government or agency help is either not available or not timely.

For example, a grant was awarded to offset the medical bills of a recent widow faced with the challenges of her husband’s suicide, the loss of her job within weeks of her husband’s death, raising a 15 year-old on her own, and attending school while undergoing extensive and costly testing to determine if she has lung cancer.

Who receives assistance?

The LRAF partners with organizations that then submit applications on behalf of their clients. Applications for assistance must be submitted through a participating agency. The LRAF does not accept applications for assistance from individuals.

Gift Baskets Since 2001

25,000 Gift Baskets Given – 25K
75,000 Products Processed – 75K

More than 75,000 products are processed at the Mothers Matter headquarters in Sewell (Washington Twp.) each year; every item is carefully checked to make sure it is new and clean, sorted by color and then product type and either placed on shelves for immediate use or crated for temporary storage.

Every gift bag contains a minimum of ten basic products plus extra “special ” items depending on availability. Additionally, every gift bag is color coordinated and includes a note card with the message that “Mothers Matter”.

During the week prior to Mother’s Day gift baskets/bags filled with women’s health and beauty care products are distributed to day care centers, nursing homes, medical-pediatric day care and rehab facilities, women’s shelters and agencies, hospital wards and facilities such as Samaritan Hospice, My Sister’s Place, Robins Nest and the Memorial Veteran’s Home in Vineland.

Now a year round program with an average annual distribution of 5,000 gift bags, this all-volunteer effort has given out more than 25,000 gift baskets/bags. (In 2009 Mothers Matter gift bags replaced baskets)
